Getting around the museum

Gressenhall Farm and Workhouse is a large site. All building and displays have level access except for the school room which has a ramp.

There is a ramped entrance to the cafe and its courtyard garden. There is a gravel courtyard and paths around some of the workhouse buildings.

There is a rough, sloped track to the farm. If you would like assistance to visit the farm, please speak to a member of staff. They may be able to arrange to you to drive down to and park on the farm. On busy days, this may not be possible.

Lift access

There is a lift in 'Staff' gallery on the ground floor of the workhouse. If you need help to use the lift, please speak to a member of staff.

Wheelchairs and mobility scooters

The museum courtyard cafe and garden have wheelchair-friendly benches.

We have six manual wheelchairs and an all-terrain mobility scooter called a 'Tramper'. These are available for visitors to borrow free of charge. We recommend you contact us to book them in advance.

Seating

There are chairs in the museum buildings and benches throughout the grounds. Outside, there are 'resting places' to lean on for a break.

Visitors who find walking tiring should consider bringing a portable chair, stick or walking frame with them.

Accessible resources

Visitors with hearing impairment

The Workhouse Galleries contain further information folders. These include transcriptions for the projections and videos on display within these spaces.

The film within the Engineering Galleries has on-screen captions.

Visitors with visual impairment

The Workhouse Galleries have folders containing large print versions of the gallery text. Magnifiers are available to use within these spaces.

Some of the Workhouse Galleries have audio which is triggered by movement. These audios help explore what life was like within the workhouse for the inmates and the staff.

There are many objects and displays which you are welcome to touch or handle. These are items not within cases or behind barriers.

Visitors with autism

Gressenhall Farm and Workhouse is an autism friendly museum. Staff and volunteers have undertaken autism awareness training.

You are welcome to bring anything that will make you more comfortable such as assistance dogs, ear defenders or toys.

Early Bird openings

We offer Early Bird openings of the Workhouse Galleries when we turn off the projections and audios in these spaces.

Spaces are limited to ensure that those who have autism and other needs have a positive experience.
